Emilio Perucca obtained a M.D. degree at the University of Pavia in Italy in 1975. Soon thereafter, he trained as a clinical pharmacologist and as a neurologist at the Chalfont Centre for Epilepsy and at the Institute of Neurology in London, where he acquired a PhD Diploma in 1980 with a thesis on the clinical implications of enzyme induction by antiepileptic drugs. In 1981 he returned to Italy where he worked first as a Lecturer and later as Associate Professor in Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Pavia. He is currently Professor of Clinical Pharmacology, University of Pavia, and Director of the Laboratories for Diagnostics and Applied Biological Research at the Institute of Neurology IRCCS C. Mondino Foundation in Pavia.
Dr. Perucca is Associate Editor of Epilepsia and a member of the editorial board of several other journals, including Epileptic Disorders, Epilepsy Research, CNS Drugs, European Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, Clinical Pharmacokinetics, Seizure, Therapeutic Drug Monitoring and Acta Neurologica Scandinavica. Between 2001 and 2005 he was Secretary to the Commission on European Affairs of the International League against Epilepsy (ILAE), member of the ILAE Commission on Therapeutic Strategies and member of the Executive Board of the European Epilepsy Academy. He is currently First Vice-President of ILAE, Past-President of the Italian League against Epilepsy and member of the Executive Board of the Clinical Pharmacology Section of the International Union of Pharmacology Societies (IUPHAR). In 1997 he received the Ambassador for Epilepsy Award from ILAE and IBE. In 1999 he was awarded honorary membership to the Polish Epilepsy Society. In 2001 he was awarded the Fellowship to the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh.
His research interests have been focused mainly on the treatment of epilepsy, with special reference to clinical pharmacokinetics, clinical trial methodology and outcome assessment. He co-edited several international textbooks and authored or co-authored many articles and book chapters in the field of clinical pharmacology and epilepsy therapy. |
