Giuliano Avanzini obtained his medical degree in 1961 and afterwards
specialized in neurology and psychiatry. He gained research and
professional experience in a number of universities in Italy and
in the United States, with an emphasis on neurophysiology.
His research interests have been focused on thalamo-cortical circuitry
in epileptogenesis, on the developmental aspects of epileptogenesis,
and on the cellular and molecular mechanisms of epilepsy. At present,
his group is particularly concentrated on the implication of sodium
channels in normal and abnormal neuronal excitability.
Giuliano Avanzini received a number of honors and awards for his
work, amongst others the Ambassador for Epilepsy Award from the
International Bureau for Epilepsy and the International League against
Epilepsy. In 2000, he was awarded the annual Epilepsy Research Award
of the American Epilepsy Society, and in 2002 the APICE Award. He
has been a member of the Executive Committee of ILAE since 1993,
where he held the positions of first vice president, treasurer and
at present he is the President of this organization. In his professional
life, he holds the position of Director of the Department of Experimental
Research and Diagnosis at the National Neurological Institute C.
Besta.
Giuliano Avanzini is involved in a number of scientific magazines
and books as editor in chief or as a member of various editorial
