| The Global Campaign Against Epilepsy
is a joint initiative of the World Health Organization (WHO),
the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE), and the International
Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE) to bring epilepsy "Out
of the Shadows" by improving diagnosis, treatment, prevention
and social acceptability of the disorder world-wide. The first phase
of the Global Campaign Against Epilepsy was launched in 1997 and
was devoted primarily to increasing public and professional awareness
of epilepsy as a universal treatable brain disorder, and raising
epilepsy to a new plane of acceptability in the public domain.The
second phase of the Global Campaign Against Epilepsy was launched
in 2001 and is devoted primarily to activities that promote public
and professional education about epilepsy, identify the needs of
people with epilepsy on a national and regional basis, and encourage
governments and departments of health to address the needs of people

The Campaign was formally launched in Geneva on 19 June 1997 and
in Dublin, Ireland on 3 July 1997 during the 22nd World Congress
on Epilepsy.
