Chilean Epilepsy Society

Establishment of the Chapter: March 16, 1999

Historical facts: The Chilean Epilepsy Society was formed with professionals from the Chilean League against Epilepsy and the Chilean Group of Epilepsy. . The Chilean Group of Epilepsy was born on December 6th, 1990 and its membership came to 52 people. It made 82 scientific monthly meetings up to March 1999 and organized 2 scientific congresses, one of them in 1993 and the other one in 1995.

Activities in relation to the Global Campaign against Epilepsy
- Organization of the event: "Epilepsy 2000" - 1st Latinamerican Congress of Epilepsy", which will take place from September 6th to Sepetember 9, 2000 in Santiage, Chile, For further information, please see: <epilepsiachile.com>: Epilepsia 2000

- Etablishment of the "Latinamerican Day of Epilepsy" on September 9, 2000.

- Announcement of the "Declaration of Santiago for the Epilepsy in Latinamerica" on September. 9, 2000.

- Combined work with the Ministy of Health of Chile to build up a "National Plan of Epilepsy for Chile".

Other activities and news

Since May 1999, the Chilean Society of Epilepsy is present in an internet site <epilepsiachile.com>, which is visited by about 30 people daily. The site has, among other things, a section of free entry for those who want to ask questions. These ones are answered by members of the Society.

The Society organized on October 26th, 1999 an Epilepsy Surgery Simposium as a part of the Anual Journeys of the Neurologial, Psychiatry and Neurosurgery Society. Members of the Society presented posters during those journeys.

The Commission formed by 10 members, all of them belonging to the Society, gathers monthly since April 1999 to work on the National Plan of Epilepsy, which will make possible the building up of an integral action plan of the people with the epilepsy existing in our country.

The Commission has received the acknowledgement and support of the Ministry of Health as a ministerial working group. ,Thus, its conclusions will be part of the ministerial rules.

At the same time, this Commission is working to obtain from the health authorities the recognition of the epilepsy as a priority disease, which will signify a major increase of economic resources for it.

The Board had 7 meetings together with the representatives of Anliche (Asociación Chilena de Ligas contra la Epilepsia), chilean Chapter of the IBE.

Summary:
The Chilean Society of Epilepsy in accordance with its goals and those of the ILAE, has carried out 9 scientific meetings, 1 per month, and has arranged 2 epilepsy events.

There are 6 commissions working: National Plan of Epilepsy, Epilepsy Surgery, Broadcasting and Internet, Committee for the arrangement of events, the Latinamerican Declaration Commission and the Latinamerican Commission.

The first issue of the Chilean Magazine of Epilepsy will appear during the year 2000.

In the course of the Global Campaign, the Society is organizing the 1st Latinamerican Congres of Epilepsy, the Latinamerican Day of Epilepsy and the Declaration of Santiago about the Epilepsy in Latinamerica.

The most important and most relevant future proyection is the combinet work which is being done with the Ministy of Health in relation to the National Plan for the Epilepsy for Chile.
