Activities In Relation To Global Campaign Against Epilepsy
Epilepsy Society of Malta was officially recognised by ILAE at Dublin
meeting May 1998 and accepted during Prague meeting 1999
The booklet îl-Epilessija u t-tfal¦ written by Dr Doriette Soler
and Dr Simon Attard Montaldo and published by Health Promotion Unit
was launched on August 4th 1999 by Minister of Health.
In the media there were interviews on several TV and radio stations
and articles in local Maltese newspapers
Other Activities
The Epilepsy Society of Malta has been set up to serve as a
local chapter of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE).
This is the association for health care and related professionals
involved in the care of people with epilepsy and it aims to promote
professional and lay knowledge of epilepsy in Malta, establish ties
with some of the leading authorities in this field of medicine,
and propagate the initiative of the International League Against
Epilepsy (ILAE) / International Bureau Against Epilepsy (IBE) (the
lay organisation) and World Health Organisation (WHO) ILAE/IBE/WHO
global campaign in epilepsy entitled Epilepsy Out of the Shadows.
It is hoped that this Society will promote and increase local awareness,
especially since there are more than 2000 people suffering from
Epilepsy in Malta. It will also be of considerable help towards
ameliorating local knowledge and services for people with epilepsy,
in collaboration with the local support group, Malta Epilepsy Support
Group, (Caritas Malta).
Local research is being carried out epidemiology of epilepsy, new
AEDs and immunological changes with administration of AEDs, and
cost effectiveness of medicines . Dr Janet Mifsud was given a DAAD
award to obtain experience at Bethel Epilepsy centre, Germany for
a month. An epilepsy advise centre was set up in the neurological
clinic as part of the service being given to the patients in conjunction
with the support group.
Although Malta is a small country, and the society is a small group,
we are aiming to represented at every major epilepsy congress or
conference.
