Mission
To promote and assist sub- or interregional coordinated actions
aimed at developing education, healthcare and research in the field
of epilepsy by groups of countries that for common historical, cultural
and linguistic background are naturally prepared to collaborate.
Goals
- To create an appropriate milieu for countries to establish
groups sharing common characteristics, which will facilitate the
collaborations to improve knowledge in epilepsy in all aspects
- To motivate and encourage projects based on bringing the nations
together using certain denominators such as common language, history,
and culture
- To search for collaborative projects, i.e., genetic, epidemiological,
treatment, and so forth
- To work with different scientific commissions of ILAE in organising
educational programs such as neurobiology
- To establish liaison with EUREPA and regional commissions
Summary of Activities for 2001-2002
The Mediterranean Conference, which has been held every two years
since 1990, is a good example of collaborative efforts of countries
from three continents based around one sea. The 7th Conference was
organised in Athens, Greece in 2001 and the next will be in Marrakech,
Morocco.
Plans for 2003-2004
As the task force has a new chair and a composition, the goals and
an action plan will be discussed during a meeting in October 2003
in Lisbon, Portugal during the 25th International Epilepsy Congress.
A priority will be assigned to the organisation of the next Mediterranean
conference. Other proposals and projects related to the goals will
be worked on, increasing communication both with the chapters and
ILAE commissions. With the increasing cooperation via a two-way
link between the chapters (or even countries devoting chapters)
and ILAE, awareness and interest in establishing collaborative studies
in many different societies will be augmented. Therefore the task
force will seek to identify new initiatives to promote international
education and understanding of epilepsy as well as to assist spontaneous
bottom-up endeavors from the chapters.
