ILAE Clinical Practice Guideline and Consensus Recommendations Methodologist

The International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) is a global association of health care professionals and scientists working toward a world where no person’s life is limited by epilepsy. Our mission is to ensure that health professionals, patients and their care providers, governments, and the public worldwide have the educational and research resources that are essential in understanding, diagnosing, and treating persons with epilepsy.

The ILAE Standards and Best Practice Council (SBP) is a council that was established in 2022 to oversee all aspects of ILAE’s work on the development, effective dissemination and efforts at implementing Clinical Practice Guidelines and Best Practice Standards in epilepsy.

Role title: Clinical Practice Guideline and Consensus Recommendations Methodologist

Description of position: We are looking to recruit a Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) and Consensus Recommendations (CRs) Methodologist on a full time basis; a part time position could be considered. This person would be an ex-officio member of the SBP Council and co-lead the Intake, Review and Methodology Committee.

Location: Remote working. Due to the registration of ILAE, full time candidates should be resident in US, UK or Ireland. For a part time position, other locations can be considered but hours must overlap with supervisor based in Central Canada.

The Methodologist will:

  • Oversee all aspects of the development of ILAE Clinical Practice Guideline development including protocol review, development of search strategy, PROSPERO registration, systematic review, quality assessment of included studies, quantitative synthesis of the evidence (meta-analysis), grading of the evidence according to GRADE framework, and formulation of the recommendations
  • Provide support, as needed, on any methodological issues related to any Clinical Practice Guidelines that ILAE is developing in partnership with other neurological organizations . Note that many of our partners also have their own methodological support available so the level of support and type of collaboration needed is likely to vary project by project
  • Augment and keep up to date the 2022 ILAE Clinical Practice Guideline Development Toolkit
  • Maintain a database with all (a) proposed CPGs to support prioritization and approval for development by an ILAE entity or in partnership with another organization (b) details of all approved CPGs under development and provide a report on progress at each SBP Council meeting
  • Provide advice and support on the best methodological approach(es) for ILAE use when developing Consensus Recommendations (approximately 4 to 6 per year)
  • Finalize the toolkit to support the development of Consensus Recommendations by ILAE
  • Maintain a database with all (a) proposed Consensus Recommendations to support prioritization and approval for development by an ILAE entity (b) details of all approved Consensus Recommendations under development and provide a report on progress at each SBP Council meeting
  • Manage the licenses and set up for the ILAE Covidence, GRADEpro and Calibrum, and monitor the SBP Council budget and expenditure
  • Support the Chair of the SBP Council in organizing council meetings including producing minutes and assisting with follow up of actions and, as required, support to taskforces and with other relevant duties as needed
  • Liaise with ILAE staff to support communication and dissemination of completed Clinical Practice Guidelines and Consensus Recommendations

The successful candidate will have:

  • Significant experience in Clinical Practice Guideline and Consensus Recommendation development processes
  • Excellent communication skills in English
  • A collaborative approach and a passion for improving health care quality
  • Ideally a MSc, MPH or PhD in epidemiology, public health, health services research or related field
  • Experience with systematic reviews and meta-analyses (including PROSPERO and software/tools for statistical analysis and meta-analyses)
  • Experience using the GRADE system (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation) and Covidence
  • Understanding of DELPHI and other approaches to developing Consensus Recommendations in health care

The following skills would be assets:

  • Understanding of neurology or epilepsy
  • Experience with dissemination and/or implementation methodology
  • Understanding of the ADAPTE process
  • Expertise with patient engagement especially in developing guidelines
