ILAE Awards Inaugural Level 3 Training Visit

Sofia Stefanie Sanchez Boluarte from the Ricardo Palma Clinic and National Institute of Neurological Sciences in Peru has been selected to receive the first Level 3 Training Visit grant from the ILAE after successfully completing the Level 2 program from the ILAE Academy, including over 100 hours each of online and in-person learning. It took her two years to the complete the Level 2 program.

In commenting on her experience with the ILAE Academy, Dr. Sanchez said, “For Level 2, I particularly enjoyed the antiseizure medication section, where I learned about selecting appropriate medications, managing drug interactions, and adjusting doses for specific epilepsy cases. The neuroimaging section was also highly educational, with practical MRI reading tools and case studies. The modules were well-structured and easy to follow.”

Dr. Sanchez has already begun her training at Western University in Canada where she is being mentored by Dr. Jorge Burneo. Dr. Sanchez hopes to improve her knowledge of epilepsy surgery and help to expand the treatments available to her patients in Peru, “The fellowship will enhance my ability to evaluate candidates for epilepsy surgery and introduce neuromodulation therapies, which are novel and underutilized in my home institution.”
