Preface to the 9 th Edition
The aim and significance of publishing this book, that is, Epilepsy
Bibliography – Book and Monographs are clearly expressed
in the preface of the 7 th edition, which was published in 1998.
The last edition contained 1349 titles. As epileptology never stopped
its steps forward, new books and monographs incessantly continued
to pour into the market, afterwards.
In recent years especially, the publications tend to take place
broadly not only in terms of targeted readers from medical and
non-medical professionals to patients and families, but also in
terms of geographical distribution ranging from developed to developing
countries in various languages. This manifest trend made the job
of book collection worldwide extremely difficult. To achieve a
goal of a comprehensive collection worldwide in a real sense, a
much more intensive international collaboration is mandatory. Honestly,
this ideal goal was not achieved yet. It is true, however, that
in the latest six years after the 7 th edition in 1998, so numerous
books and monographs on epilepsy had newly been published even
if limiting the matters to developed countries only, that I thought
it worthwhile to issue the 8 th edition of Epilepsy Bibliography
by integrating these new materials into the 7 th edition, at this
moment.
To collect information resources for the 8 th edition, several
routes were pursued, this time. Visits to the book exhibitions
at the meetings, and active collection of book list leaflets as
well as accesses to the websites of various publishers were the
primary step of work-ups. Secondly, a book search at the Amazon.
com proved to be very helpful, although the information provided
there were often inaccurate in particulars.
Finally, I am indebted to many colleagues for acquiring pertinent
information, especially to Dr M. Bureau for French books, Dr H.
Stefan, Dr G. Krämer and Dr D. Schmidt for German books, and
Dr R. Riikonen for Finnish books. Taking this opportunity, I would
like to express my special thanks for their kind cooperation.
Eventually, more than 1000 titles including not only those published
in recent years but also rather old books previously eluted, were
added to this edition. To help an accurate identification, the
official numbers such as ISBN, ISSN, etc. have been attached to
each title, as far as they were available. This new arrangement
will provide an efficient means of retrieval for readers hopefully.
Thus, the editor is pleased to dedicate this new 8 th edition
to all people in the world who concern the issues of epilepsy.
At the same time, he wishes to announce his determination to promote
the second step to expand the coverage further to include less
familiar publishing in corners of the world in near future, under
a closer international collaboration.
The editor presents his special appreciation to Mr. H. Yanagii,
Kyowa Hakko Kogyo Co, for his generous support, and to Mr. S. Kobayashi,
Three “I” Publications, for his tireless engagement
in the production. The same appreciation should go to Mrs. Y. Miyawaki
and Mrs. S. Hirose for her excellent secretarial works.
