Annual Report of the Cameroonian League Against Epilepsy

Summary of Activities:

On February 15, 2020, as part of International Epilepsy Day, the Cameroonian League Against Epilepsy (LCCE) organized in the conference room of the regional hospital (HR) of Bafoussam (West region of Cameroon) a practical training of doctors and nurses. The training included a program for paramedics in the morning and a program for doctors in the afternoon. Several topics were discussed including: the definition of epilepsy and epileptic seizures, pathophysiology, causes, clinical semiology of seizures, additional examinations to be performed in the event of a first seizure, treatment with emphasis on medication essential and epilepsy in everyday life (confers scientific program).

A pretest was carried out before the start of the presentations to assess the level of knowledge of the participants.We recorded the presence of 160 participants including state-certified nurses, nurses specializing in mental health, nursing aides, senior technicians, speech therapists, psychologists, medical students, general practitioners and specialists.

The participants mainly came from all health districts in the Western region and neighboring regions. The trainers were the neurologists and paediatric neurologists. At the end of the training, a post-test was carried out to assess the impact of the presentations on the knowledge of the participants. The work was closed by Prof. KUATE TEGUEU Callixte after a word of thanks from the director of HR in Bafoussam. The Regional Public Health Delegate of the Western Region asked LCCE to prepare a training plan for health area agents and community relays for a wider dissemination of this knowledge in order to improve access. caring for people living with epilepsy in the region. After the training, the LCCE held a General Assembly.

Challenges:

The year 2020 was definitely a particular one with the Covid-19 pandemic. As any other part of the world, Cameroon has been affected, leading to profound changes in the whole society in general and more specifically in our healthcare system. The Cameroonian League Against Epilepsy has not been spared by this pandemic.
