Asian and Oceanian Outstanding Achievement Epilepsy Award (AOEA) 2014

Maria Soto obtained her medical degree in the Philippines and trained in the USA in Internal Medicine, Neurology and EEG. On her return, she established the first EEG laboratory in the Philippines and spearheaded the training of several generations of neurology residents and technicians in EEG and epilepsy. Dr Soto supervised an innovative model of care for patients; "Epilepsy Manager Program," making available to the Filipino people a doctor who is competent in managing persons with epilepsy at the primary care level. In a career spanning 34 years, Dr Soto has made major contributions in Epilepsy education, Neurophysiology training and care for disadvantaged patients with epilepsy.
