European Epilepsy Team Excellence Award 2026
ERN EpiCARE
The ERN EpiCARE, created in 2017, is structured as a team composed of more than 60 hospital-based medical departments, with a high level of expertise in diagnosis and treatment of rare and complex epilepsies, spread in 24 EU countries. Supporting partners in the global European region or national reference networks closely work with EpiCARE. A strong patient advocates group, reflecting a large panel of epilepsy categories are part of EpiCARE. The management of EpiCARE is funded by the European Commission; Doctors, Researchers, Nurses, patient advocates contribute to the missions and activities on a voluntary basis.
The structure of ERN EpiCARE, is designed to reach, in the long run, the following global goals:
- Serve health professionals (HCPs) as the premier international resource for current and emerging standards and best practices in epilepsy care
- Support HCPs to enhance their knowledge and skills in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and care of epilepsy.
- Advocate for epilepsy as a public health imperative
- Liaise with patient associations and patient advocates
- Promote research and innovation for epilepsy
- Facilitate Cross-borders equal access to care
To achieve the above, twenty Working Groups and many Special Interest Groups focus on issues related: to best practices in epilepsy care, reflecting the multidisciplinary care and expertise needed to achieve a global approach both for diagnostics and therapeutic strategies; to improve Healthcare and Research policies; clinical trials; education and training policies; Guidelines and Recommendations; Support to the development of National networks for epilepsy care; the development of an EU-based Registry for rare and complex epilepsies.
