Maeike Zijlmans

Maeike Zijlmans is a Dutch neurologist and researcher, specialized in epilepsy, working at the University Medical Center Utrecht (UMCU) and Stichting Epilepsie Instellingen Nederland (SEIN). She did her medical training, residency and sub specialization at the UMCU. She finished her PhD on ‘characterization of the focus of epilepsy’ with honors in 2013. In 2001 and 2008, she spend a fellowship at the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital. She learned here about high frequency oscillations (HFOs) and applied the knowledge in her research that followed, including a prospective randomized controlled trial on the use of HFOs during epilepsy surgery. She was awarded an ERC starting grant in 2018 to improve recording and analysis of intra-operative electrocorticography. This year (2022) she is appointed full professor in ‘advanced neurophysiology for epilepsy surgery’. She is the author on more than 80 peer-reviewed papers in the field of epilepsy, most as first or last author and supervisor of 12 PhD students.
