The Italian League Against Epilepsy (LICE) and International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE), on behalf of countless colleagues and friends, wish to honour the memory of Ettore Beghi.

Ettore Beghi passed away on 10 October 2022 at the age of 75 in Milan, Italy, fighting his last battle against a very serious illness with dignity, showing his usual courage in facing life's challenges.

Although it is tragic to think of Ettore leaving us so early, he left behind a lifetime of extraordinary memories.

Ettore Beghi was born on 15 August 1947 and graduated from the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Milan in 1972. He specialised in neurology at the same university, where he later obtained a post-doctoral fellowship and a subsequent master's degree in research in pharmacological sciences at the 'Mario Negri' Institute in Milan.

He then spent a year as a research fellow in the Department of Medical Statistics and Epidemiology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, from 1982-1983, where his passion for epidemiology met his energy.

Since 1996 he was head of the Laboratory of Neurological Diseases at the Mario Negri IRCCS Pharmacological Research Institute in Milan, formerly head and staff member of the Regional Epilepsy Centre at the Monza Hospital, Milan.

He was an active member of countless national and international scientific societies and committees. He was a member of several editorial boards of scientific journals.

Within the ILAE, Ettore Beghi played several important roles. He had been a member of the following commissions and task forces:

  • Commission on Epilepsy, Risk and Insurance

He participated in the creation of the first network between Epilepsy Centres in Italy back in 1987.

He was President of the Italian League against Epilepsy (LICE) from 2008 to 2011.

His research activity has focused in particular on the neuroepidemiology of epilepsy and motor neuron diseases worldwide, but he also dealt with many diseases in the neurological field. Indeed, he published more than 480 scientific articles. He also participated in the creation of registries for rare neurological diseases.

He was one of the pioneers of multicentric neuro-epidemiological studies in Italy, with a special aptitude for bringing people together and networking and managing their enthusiasm. He was able to follow patients in the outpatient clinic as well as manage a research laboratory.

During the COVID pandemic, he participated in the work of the WHO group on Neurocovid, always ready to provide his expertise to help others.

Ettore Beghi was a great teacher and mentor to many young neurologists and researchers, a reliable friend. His advice and guidance will continue to accompany us through the joys and challenges that research has to offer.

Throughout his life, he was always able to make his interlocutor feel special and included in the group, helping hundreds of people gain self-confidence along the way. He was a man who left a lasting impression on everyone he met. His deep laugh and kind eyes warmed the room and brought life into all activities. Never angry, never aggressive, never abusive, he greeted everyone with a smile and a willingness to help and participate in the proposals put to him.

He was a kind and thoughtful person.

We express our condolences to his beautiful wife Maria Lidia, his three children Massimiliano, Emanuele and Nadia, and his grandchild of whom he was a proud grandfather.

His cheerful attitude and bright smile will be missed by all.
