Vladimir A. Karlov

On April 26, 2025, Vladimir Alekseevich Karlov, President of the Russian League Against Epilepsy, an outstanding scientist, Soviet and Russian neurologist, epileptologist, World War II veteran, Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Society of Neurologists, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Medical Sciences, and Professor at the Department of Neurology of the N.A. Semashko Research and Educational Institute of Clinical Medicine at the Russian University of Medicine of the Ministry of Health of Russia, passed away.
Vladimir Alekseevich was born on January 5, 1926, in Oryol, into a family of doctors. In 1952, he graduated with honors from the 1st Moscow Medical Institute (now Sechenov University) and worked as a neurologist in Maloarkhangelsk, Oryol Region, for five years by assignment. Subsequently, his practical work included roles as Head of the Neurology Department at the Ramenskoye Central District Hospital in the Moscow Region, researcher at the N.V. Sklifosovsky Institute of Emergency Medicine, consulting professor at Moscow City Hospitals No. 6 and 29, and at the Neurology Department of the N.A. Semashko Research and Educational Institute at the Russian University of Medicine.
In 1961, at the Institute of Neurology of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences, he defended his candidate dissertation on “Clinical Analysis of Epileptic Hemiplegia” and his doctoral dissertation on “Epileptic Status (Etiology, Clinical Features, Diagnosis, Treatment, Issues of Pathomorphology and Pathogenesis)” in 1969.
The entirety of Vladimir Alekseevich's professional life was connected to the N.A. Semashko Moscow Medical Institute. In 1971, he became the head of the Department of Nervous Diseases at the Faculty of Medicine (now the Department of Neurology of the N.A. Semashko Research and Educational Institute of Clinical Medicine at the Russian University of Medicine), leading it until 1999 and remaining a professor there until his passing.
V.A. Karlov was an outstanding Russian scientist with global recognition. He developed fundamentally new approaches to numerous neurological issues, with his primary focus being epilepsy, to which he dedicated his life. His research findings were consistently presented at international congresses, receiving high praise from the global professional community. In 2010, V.A. Karlov was recognized among the outstanding scientists of the “Millennium” and awarded a Gold Medal, followed by the Cambridge Certificate from the International Biographical Institute in 2011.
Vladimir Alekseevich was the author of over 900 research papers, including 18 monographs. His most comprehensive federal guideline, *Epilepsy in Children and Adult Women and Men* (2010, 718 pages; second edition 2019, 893 pages), stands out as a landmark contribution.
Professor Karlov was a mentor and academic advisor, supervising 12 doctoral and 37 candidate dissertations.
His contributions were repeatedly recognized with various orders and medals from both the USSR and the Russian Federation.
Vladimir Alekseevich’s life was marked by boundless dedication to his chosen profession and service to people. He possessed a keen sense of justice and was a reliable friend—compassionate, empathetic, and never indifferent to the hardships of others, always ready to help at any time. A true professional, he exuded calm and inner confidence in his expertise.
The passing of Professor Karlov is an irreparable loss for the department, the university, Russian and global epileptology, Russian medicine, and Russia as a whole.
