Epilepsy Nurses for Switzerland

Nurses are increasingly taking on new responsibilities – this helps patients and their families, and reduces the load on doctors. The Swiss League Against Epilepsy is launching a pilot project to train and introduce specialist epilepsy nurses throughout Switzerland, and is looking for project partners.

Switzerland already has specialist nurses in for Parkinson's Disease, breast cancer and palliative care, and in many other countries specialist epilepsy nurses are well established. Now the Swiss League Against Epilepsy wants to set up specialist training in Switzerland, and to introduce the first Swiss “epilepsy nurses” in collaboration with selected hospitals. The Epilepsy League is able to partially cover the initial additional costs thanks to endowments and donations from corporate partners. In the medium and long term, the idea is for costs to be reimbursed by health insurers.

Who can participate?

Medical institutions in Switzerland which treat adults and/or children with epilepsy, in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

The idea

The participating institutions nominate a nurse or technologist in clinical neurophysiology who is suitable for the new role: He/she ideally has at least 2 years’ experience with epilepsy patients and is interested in learning new skills, improving his/her knowledge and taking on new responsibilities. He or she will attend specialist training sessions, possibly in Germany or France (up to 140 hours in total). The nurse will then be released from other tasks to manage and support epilepsy patients and their families for about 15% of full-time working hours, equating to around 6 hours per week. This arrangement will initially be for one year (the duration may be extended depending on the number of participating project partners). The Epilepsy League will cover the training costs and contribute up to CHF 12,000 towards the salary of the epilepsy nurse.

We offer

• Co-financing of new tasks, project contribution of up to CHF 12,000 [per nurse]
• The project covers the costs of training courses to acquire specialist knowledge (nurses can study for the “Epilepsie Fachassistenz/Fachberatung” qualification in Bethel if they wish)
• Detailed project documentation on procedures and potential tasks
• Scientific evaluation of the project via an externally conducted master's thesis is planned
• Opportunity to network with other participating nurses

We need applicants to

• Identify a suitable nurse internally (see requirements above)
• Let us know how many hours per week will be reserved for the new role, and how you will ensure they are used in a worthwhile manner
• Enclose a letter confirming your interest, along with the CV of the selected candidate (in German, French or English)
• Ensure that the nurse can attend the specialist training courses during regular paid working hours. Some courses may take place before the official project start
• Ensure that the person is released from other duties for the working hours allocated to the project, at least for the duration of the project
• Ensure an agreement is in place for the reimbursement of course costs should the selected person hand in their notice during the project period

« Epilepsy Nurses » pour la Suisse

Les infirmières et infirmiers assument des responsabilités croissantes dans le secteur de la santé, ce qui profite aux patientes et patients et à leurs familles, tout en délestant les médecins. La Ligue Suisse contre l’Epilepsie souhaite former en conséquence du personnel qualifié et le déployer dans toute la Suisse dans le cadre d’un projet pilote. Pour cela, elle recherche des partenaires.

En Suisse, il existe des infirmières et infirmiers spécialisés dans les domaines de la maladie de Parkinson, du cancer du sein ou des soins palliatifs. Dans de nombreux autres pays, la spécialisation en épilepsie est également courante depuis longtemps. La Ligue Suisse contre l’Epilepsie souhaite à présent mettre en place une formation spécifique chez nous aussi et déployer une première promotion d’« Epilepsy Nurses » sur le terrain. La ligue peut financer une partie des surcoûts initiaux avec l’aide de fondations et d’entreprises. L’ambition est qu’à moyen et long terme, ces coûts puissent être facturés.

Qui peut participer?

Institutions médicales en Suisse qui prennent en charge des adultes et/ou des enfants atteints d’épilepsie, en soins stationnaires ou ambulatoires.

L’idée

L’institution participante désigne une personne (infirmière/infirmier ou spécialiste en diagnostic neurophysiologique) au profil en adéquation avec la nouvelle attribution : idéalement, au moins 2 ans d’expérience auprès de personnes atteintes d’épilepsie et envie d’acquérir des compétences supplémentaires, d’élargir ses connaissances et d’assumer de nouvelles tâches. Celle-ci suivra des cours spécifiques, peut-être en France ou Allemagne (jusqu’à 140 heures au total). Elle sera ensuite déchargée d’autres tâches pour s’occuper des patientes et patients atteints d’épilepsie et de leurs proches et les soutenir à raison d’environ 15% d’un poste à plein temps ou de 6 heures hebdomadaires, d’abord pour un an (éventuellement plus selon le nombre de partenaires du projet). La ligue prendra en charge les frais de cours et jusqu’à CHF 12’000.– de leur salaire.

Notre offre

• Financement commun des nouvelles tâches, contribution au projet pouvant atteindre CHF 12’000.–.
• Le projet finance les frais de formation continue. Si elle le souhaite, la personne peut obtenir le certificat « Epilepsie Fachassistenz/Fachberatung » (assistant/conseiller spécialisé en épilepsie) à Bethel.
• Description détaillée du projet avec la procédure et de possibles tâches.
• Possibilité d’échanger avec d’autres personnes participantes (réseautage).
• Une évaluation scientifique externe du projet est prévue dans le cadre d’un mémoire de master.

Nos attentes à l’égard des partenaires du projet

• Trouvez une candidate ou un candidat approprié en interne (voir profil ci-dessus).
• Indiquez-nous le futur nombre d’heures hebdomadaires consacrées au nouveau rôle et la méthode retenue pour s’assurer de leur utilisation à bon escient.
• Envoyez-nous une lettre de motivation et le CV de la personne (en français, allemand ou anglais).
• Assurez-vous qu’elle puisse suivre les formations/cours pendant ses heures de travail, éventuellement avant le début officiel du projet.
• Veillez à ce qu’elle n’assume pas d’autres tâches pendant les heures dédiées prévues, au moins pendant la durée du projet.
• Faites en sorte que les frais de cours soient remboursés si la personne sélectionnée démissionne en cours de projet.

«Epilepsy Nurses» für die Schweiz

Pflegefachpersonen übernehmen immer mehr Verantwortung im Gesundheitswesen – das nützt den Betroffenen und ihren Familien, und Ärztinnen und Ärzte werden entlastet. Mit einem Pilotprojekt will die Schweizerische Epilepsie-Liga Pflegekräfte in der ganzen Schweiz entsprechend ausbilden und einsetzen. Dafür sucht sie nun Partner.

Spezialisierte Pflegefachpersonen gibt es in der Schweiz für Parkinson, für Brustkrebs oder für Palliativpflege – und in vielen anderen Ländern längst auch für Epilepsie. Nun will die Schweizerische Epilepsie-Liga auch bei uns eine spezielle Ausbildung etablieren und gemeinsam mit ausgewählten Spitälern erste «Epilepsy Nurses» in die Praxis bringen. Einen Teil der anfänglichen Zusatzkosten kann die Liga mithilfe von Stiftungen und Firmen aufbringen. Mittel- und langfristig sollen die Kosten abgerechnet werden können.

Wer kann teilnehmen?

Medizinische Institutionen in der Schweiz, die Erwachsene und/oder Kinder mit Epilepsie behandeln, stationär und ambulant

Die Idee

Die teilnehmende Institution ernennt eine Pflegefachperson oder Fachperson für Neurophysiologische Diagnostik, die sich für die neue Aufgabe eignet: Idealerweise hat er/sie mindestens 2 Jahre Erfahrung mit Epilepsie-Betroffenen und will gerne zusätzliche Fertigkeiten erwerben, ihr Wissen erweitern und neue Aufgaben übernehmen. Er/sie wird spezielle Kurse besuchen, möglicherweise in Deutschland oder Frankreich (bis zu 140 Stunden insgesamt). Die Person wird dann von anderen Aufgaben entlastet, um mit ca. 15% einer Vollzeitstelle oder 6 Wochenstunden EpilepsiepatientInnen und deren Angehörige zu betreuen und zu unterstützen, zunächst für ein Jahr (je nach Zahl der Projektpartner eventuell länger). Die Liga wird die Kurskosten und bis zu CHF 12'000 ihres Lohns übernehmen.

• Geplant ist eine wissenschaftliche Evaluation des Projekts im Rahmen einer Masterarbeit, die extern vergeben wird.

Wir erwarten von Projektpartnern

• Finden Sie intern eine geeignete Person (Anforderungen siehe oben)
• Teilen Sie uns mit, wie viele Wochenstunden für die neue Rolle reserviert sein werden, und wie sichergestellt wird, dass diese sinnvoll eingesetzt werden
• Senden Sie uns ein Anschreiben und den Lebenslauf der Kandidatin oder des Kandidaten (auf Deutsch, Französisch oder Englisch)
• Stellen Sie sicher, dass er/sie Lehrgänge/Kurse während der Arbeitszeit besuchen kann, möglicherweise vor dem offiziellen Projektstart
• Stellen Sie sicher, dass die Person in der entsprechend vorgesehenen Arbeitszeit keine anderen Aufgaben hat, zumindest während der Projektdauer
• Stellen Sie sicher, dass die Kurskosten erstattet werden, falls die ausgewählte Person während der Projektlaufzeit kündigt.
