Athanasios Covanis

Thanos Covanis is the current President of the Greek ILAE and IBE chapters and past-President of the IBE from 2013 to 2017. He trained in paediatrics, neonatology, child neurology and adult neurology-neurophysiology and epileptology in United Kingdom. He served as a Head of the Neurology/Neurophysiology Department at the “Agia Sophia” Children’s Hospital, Athens for 28 years. During those years he actively promoted epilepsy by organizing epilepsy clinics with epilepsy trained nurses and EEG technicians. He created the Greek/ILAE chapter on May 26th, 1993. Over the past decades, he has contributed to several ILAE/IBE advocacy groups to raise awareness on several epilepsy-related issues with an ultimate goal of optimizing the management and improving the quality of life of people with epilepsy and those who care for them. For these services, he received in 2003 the ILAE-IBE Ambassador for Epilepsy Award. He has organized 18 Pan-Hellenic epilepsy congresses with international participation and 23 workshops in epilepsy. He has given numerous lectures on epilepsy and has contributed as an author in several articles in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters.
