ILAE-YES Basic and Translational Science Webinar Series

Online

6 December 2023 - 28 February 2024

15:00 - 16:00 Coordinated Universal Time

Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological diseases, affecting more than 50 million people worldwide. Although more than 20 antiseizure medications are available, up to a third of patients do not become seizure-free. Moreover, no anti-epileptogenic therapies have been approved for clinical use. Therefore, new insights in ictogenesis and epileptogenesis are necessary to develop targeted therapeutic approaches.

This series of online seminars aims to discuss different concepts and methods in basic and translational epilepsy research. During the webinars, researchers will present their work applicable methods used in epilepsy research. We aim to reach a broad audience, including all health professionals, interested in basic and translational epilepsy research.

Organizer: Young Epilepsy Section (YES)

Learning Objectives

After the sessions, the participants should be able to:

  1. Understand the need for different in vitro, in vivo, and in silico models used in epilepsy research and demonstrate knowledge of the strengths and limitations of each model.
  2. Gain an understanding of the principles and methods of EEG recording in animal models and how EEG can be used to study seizure activity and epilepsy in animals.
  3. Explore the process of drug design and discovery of antiseizure medications and discuss the current challenges and future directions in this field.
  4. Gain knowledge of the genetic basis of epilepsy and the animal models used in research, and discuss their relevance to personalized approaches in epilepsy diagnosis and treatment.

By achieving these learning objectives, participants will develop a comprehensive understanding on some methods used in basic and translational research in epilepsy, including models, EEG recording, drug discovery, and neurogenetics.

Format

  1. Researchers in basic and translational neurosciences will give their lectures online through Zoom.
  2. An interactive session will be held after their presentation to facilitate discussion.
