ILAE Actions to Support People with Epilepsy Affected by the Situation in Ukraine

9 March, 2022

The conflict in Ukraine is causing severe difficulties for people with epilepsy and the health professionals who support them.

It is estimated that around 250,000 people have epilepsy in Ukraine. Anti-seizure medicine supplies are now running low in the country, and nearly two million people have fled into neighboring countries with more refugees likely to follow over the coming weeks.

On 7 March 2022, ILAE held a meeting with leaders from chapters in all countries affected by the situation in Ukraine. The group agreed on a set of seven key actions. ILAE is also forming a task force to oversee implementation of these actions, as well as to advise on the unfolding situation. Further information on all these activities including details on our fundraising campaign will follow shortly.

ILAE recognizes the gravity of this crisis along with the enormous and unacceptable gaps in treatment that continue to occur in many parts of the world. In tandem with these emergency and existing activities, ILAE is also enhancing efforts to fully utilize the advocacy and service strengthening opportunities that will arise with the anticipated approval of the Intersectoral Global Action Plan on Epilepsy and Other Neurological Disorders at the World Health Assembly in May 2022.
